HISTORY
The Angel Fire area and the Moreno Valley were in the range of some of the most ancient peoples in the Americas. More recently, it became the home of Ute and Apache Indians, with the Spaniards visiting the area as early as 1540, searching for gold.
Birth of a Resort Town - In the 1950's, the Lebus family of Texas purchased 23,000 acres to develop the property into a resort community. In 1966 construction began - the first ski trails were cut, a 9-hole golf course was completed and Monte Verde Lake was ready for visitors. Word of the resort spread quickly drawing visitors from New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. New accommodations were needed to house these many visitors and the first condominiums were completed in 1971. In 1972, utilities began to be installed at lot sites, new roads were built, and clearing began for new ski trails. By 1973, Angel Fire was visited by more than 20,000 skiers and the Angel Fire Country Club was built. Over the next decades, the resort was sold many times - each time, bringing a brighter future with new improvements and additions to the resort. In 1986, Angel Fire was incorporated as a municipality of New Mexico. Today, there is a year-round population of about 1200 people and any weekend during the summer and winter, crowds can swell to more than 10,000 people.
